Did you know that 2,200 years ago the Greek astronomer and mathematician Aristarchus of Samos was the first scientist to calculate the distance to the moon by using careful observations, measurements, and a geometric model? It took 2,000 years for someone to come up with a better method! Calculating the distance to the moon is just one example of the real-world problems embedded throughout the Eureka Math curriculum.

Eureka Math is a very popular open-source mathematics curriculum published by Great Minds. It started in 2012 as EngageNY, a New York State Education Department initiative to create a high-quality, free mathematics curriculum. The curriculum, including lesson plans, worksheets, and assessments, is free to download. Several organizations, including EdReports and the state of Louisiana have rated Eureka Math / EngageNY as highly effective, and the curriculum has been downloaded more than 13 million times since its creation.
Some tests measure where students are in different areas and help teachers know how best to support each child. The KRA is one of these tests. Children in Maryland take this test early in their kindergarten year to measure where they are in language and literacy, math, social skills, physical well-being, and motor development.
This spring, Maryland students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades will take PARCC tests in English language arts and math. The results show whether students are meeting standards for their grade and are on track toward high school graduation. In 5th grade, students also take the Maryland Integrated Science Assessment to see how they are doing in meeting standards in science.
Great Minds, the Washington-based nonprofit publisher of the curriculum, offers a broad copyright license to schools and the public for free downloads of Eureka Math for non-commercial use. But the terms of the license reserves the right to collect royalties when the curriculum is copied for commercial purposes.

BATON ROUGE - Education doesn't have to come to an end with summer vacation and the Louisiana Department of Education is proving this with its Wednesday morning announcement of an expanded partnership with Louisiana Public Broadcasting (LPB) to televise high-quality math instruction on a regular schedule from July 6 to July 31.
The instructional programming, designed for all students in kindergarten through ninth grade, will be aligned to top-rated math curriculum and learning standards, meaning the broadcasts will help students build the skills and knowledge they need at each grade level.
